Urban Develop has launched Burnley Maltings, a collection of new heritage terraces townhouses which will be developed as an adaptive reuse of the heritage-protected landmark building Barrett & Burston Maltings in Burnley.

Over the years, the landmark building has undergone numerous transformations, evolving from Terry's Burnley Brewery in the late 1800s into the recently vacated Barrett & Burston Maltings.

Today, it stands on the precipice of another remarkable transformation as Burnley Maltings takes centre stage.

Burnley Maltings comprises only 37 two and three-bedroom heritage and contemporary townhouses with a rooftop terrace overlooking uninterrupted views of the Yarra River, the CBD skyline, and glimpses of Melbourne's prestigious mansions along Alexandra Parade, South Yarra, and St Georges Road, Toorak.

The townhouses will surround the iconic Burnley heritage silos and a lush, green courtyard landscaped by the renowned Jack Merlo.

The architectural vision for this project is to acknowledge and celebrate the site's heritage while ushering in a new chapter of its storied existence.

Inspired by Burnley's urban, industrial, landscape, and residential heritage, Freadman White Architects integrated the heritage-protected grain silos and iconic facades on Gibdon Street and the Monash Freeway into the new architectural design, artfully modernised with contemporary elements such as large windows and vertical louvres.

Spanning an impressive 3,568 sqm, the Barrett & Co Maltings site is only four kilometres from the CBD, at the centre of inner-city amenities, roads and parks and boasts extensive panoramic views—highly appealing attributes to prospective buyers in the Melbourne market.

Colliers agent Peter Bremner says it's probably one of the largest undeveloped titles in Burnley. It offers impressive views of the CBD skyline from higher levels and provides good panoramic views in all directions.

The Burnley Maltings Display, housed in the old caretaker's quarters, provides a compelling insight into how the project will marry contemporary living with historical preservation. Every aspect, from signage to display items, has been thoughtfully curated to align with strict heritage overlays, ensuring that the rich history of this site is revered and celebrated.
