<h2><strong>LISA MCLEAN FROM OPEN CITIES</strong></h2>

<p>Open Cities CEO Lisa McLean covered the topic of urbanisation in Australia with a focus on how we must create genuine self-sustaining, liveable communities. This could be achieved through the use of smart and sustainable technologies such as renewable energy, water recycling and more.</p>

<h2><strong>DR SIMONE ZARPELON LEAO FROM UNSW</strong></h2>

<p>Dr Simone Zarpelon Leao – Associate Dean at the Faculty of Built Environment at UNSW shared insight into the connection between technology, sustainability and building resilience. Dr Simone encouraged the audience to question what kind of change will take shape as we develop smart, sustainable cities.</p>

<h2><strong>BRONWYN WEIR FROM WEIR LEGAL AND CONSULTING</strong></h2>

<p>Legal expert Bronwyn Weir discussed the pertinent topic of regulatory reform and shared her vision for the improvement of Australian building standards. Weir believes the industry must place more importance on the value of peer review and that good documentation processes must be in place throughout the course of a project – from design to completion.</p>

<h2><strong>MICHELLE CIESIELSKI FROM KNIGHT FRANK</strong></h2>

<p>Michelle Ciesielski explored the rise of luxury developments, drawing facts from Knight Frank’s recently released The Wealth Report 2019. Ciesielski noted that the changes in currency conversion rates could be causing an increase in international buyers seeking luxury property across Australia.</p>

<h2><strong>WILLIAM SMART FROM SMART DESIGN STUDIO</strong></h2>

<p>In keeping with the luxury theme, architect William Smart of Smart Design Studio said that from a design perspective, the idea of luxury is shifting as modern living requirements change. Instead, there is more of a focus on creating authentic and unpredictable spaces.</p>

DesignBUILD coverage: Wrap-up of DAY TWO

<p>DesignBUILD is returning for its 32nd year from Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 May, with a central theme of ‘it’s all in the detail’, featuring a trade exhibition that will showcase service providers such as PowerHouse prefabricated homes, Wattyl Paint and Swiss Krono Group, to name a few.</p>

<p>Alongside the trade exhibition are two paid speaker and education programs, curated to cover the themes of industry compliance, sustainability and innovation, including panel discussions on topics such as build to rent, property resale and commercial buildings of the future.</p>

<p>Keynote speakers Michael McCormack (Milieu Property Group), Robert Simeoni (Robert Simeoni Architects) and Simon Knott (BKK Architects) will be joining the town planners and design panel to discuss how the growth of Melbourne as an international city depends on a successful working relationship between developers, architects and town planners.</p>

<p>Alongside the speaker program, DesignBUILD’s ‘Incubator’ is a creative pavilion at the trade show that champions innovative thinkers and gives them a proven, commercial platform to launch their inventions.</p>

<figcaption>Photo from last year's DesignBUILD conference. Image: Supplied</figcaption></figure><p>The five most innovative entries are judged by an industry advisory panel against a set of criteria covering: innovation, creativity, sustainability and proposed impact on industry.</p>

<p>In another project, DesignBUILD’s RAW allows university students from architecture and design disciplines to experience the full tender and construction process as they compete to have their designs built as key feature areas on the show floor.</p>

<p>Speaking to Urban.com.au last month, conference director Pia Argiratos stated that one of the key outcomes for the conference was t<em>o </em>stimulate big picture thinking, but also give pragmatic information that visitors can use in their next project.</p>

<p>The conference program is focused on how we can do things better, from improving the sustainability of our buildings, to changing how project teams work together using technology and collaborative processes.</p>

<p>We talk about how the design of a building can influence the wellbeing of people who live and work there, and what our communities might need from buildings in the future. These kinds of improvements come from the combination of new approaches in design as well as new, innovative products that solve problems. DesignBUILD offers an opportunity for the entire industry to communicate and learn together as a team.</p>

<p>For me, “It’s all in the detail” talks of improvement by increments, so if we can give people information that helps them tweak their work here and there to become a bit better each day, then we have contributed to the industry and the community.</p>
