AFL legend Greg 'Diesel' Williams has sold Ardoch Tower, the Essendon trophy home.

Bought for a suburb record $3.08 million in 2004, Williams restored the Brewster Street home opposite Essendon Football Club's Windy Hill HQ.

It had $7 million price hopes, and is believed to have sold near that figure, which will make the 1860s Italianate residence the second highest sale in the suburb.

The home, complete with a tower that has 360 degree views across Melbourne, has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and parking for eight cars.

It features 4 metre high decorative ceilings painted by an artist who died on the Titanic.

A swimming pool, spa, tennis court and an all-weather alfresco area with pizza oven sits in the 2,455 sqm resort-style grounds.

Williams, a dual Brownlow Medal winner, played for Carlton, Sydney and Geelong over his 250 game, 13 year career.
