Melbourne Metro EES released; more information on station proposals

This morning the Victorian Government released the environmental effects statement (EES) for the Melbourne Metro Rail project and the release of the document suite now provides a clearer picture on how we'll all access the stations once the project is complete.

The full document suite has a map book which provides the most relevant information on station entrances yet. And it makes for interesting reading (or should that be viewing?).

The map book details expected areas that will be excavated; outlines station footprints as well as depicting the location of proposed surface buildings such as ventilation infrastructure and station entrances.

Here's a summary from west to east along the path of the Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel; green depicts ventilation infrastructure, red outlines the station footprint and blue patches delineate station entrance buildings.

Arden Station is proposed to have a single station entry at the station's western end fronting Laurens Street with provisions made for two future station entries to the north and south.

Parkville Station is proposed to have multiple station entrances from the outset: opposite Barry Street on Grattan Street and on the north-eastern and south-western corners of the Royal Parade and Grattan Street intersection.

CBD North or better known as Melbourne Central Station is proposed to have two surface level buildings as station entrances: one in Franklin Street and one on the corner of La Trobe and Swanston Street.

CBD South (Flinders Street) looks set to have the most surface buildings acting as station entrances across the project - Federation Square, Collins Street, Flinders Lane and a very large entrance building between Young & Jackson and the Nicholas Building on Swanston Street.

​Domain Station is proposed to have three station entrances: one each on the eastern and western sides of St Kilda Road and one for a new, rebuilt domain tram stop, which itself is proposed to move south of where it currently lies.

The environmental effects statement (EES) is on public display until the 6th of July and submissions can be made through the DELWP website.

At time of publishing, the only other renders of the stations available are contained within a video the Premier sent through his facebook and twitter feeds, see below.

Is it really going to be CBD North and CBD South? What's Melbourne about that? All cities have CBDs. Country towns have CBDs.

How about Hoddle North and Hoddle South?

They're temporary names, no doubt something more fitting will be chosen for them, probably just Melbourne Central for CBD north, or something confusing and dumb like Melbourne City Metro Station.

I assume they're just be Melbourne Central and Flinders St ultimately. But if you want to play up the significance of the project, it wouldnt really pay to refer to them as such yet. Implies it's just a minor capacity boost at existing stations, whereas in truth it's much more complex to construct these interchange stations than it would be new stand alone stations.

Looking at the maps, you'd hope that "CBD South" might end up with "City Square" as a name. Not sure what "CBD North" might become.

CBD North could be called RMIT University or State Library of VIctoria (although are we allowed to have proper names of institutions as Station names? If not, why not just Library Station since it will be close to educational institutions and to two Libraries - the SLV and RMIT Library. If not it could always be named after the streets like Franklin & La Trobe.

Same for CBD South since it will have access at Fed Square and City Square just name it one of those squares (or Squares Station hahaha). It could also be called Town Hall since it's going to be next to it.

But I do agree that the most probable outcome would be Melbourne Central and Flinders Street.

The sooner they name these CBD stations by real name, the sooner the public will get to know them. City Baths would be a great name for CBD north, and St Paul's would be great for CBD south. And dare I say, that Melbourne Central should have been renamed State Library or simply Library, as the connotation of the word "Central" to most tourists and new comers means the main train terminal for Melbourne, which it certainly isn't.

Re Parkville: No exit to the south side of Grattan St?
Re Domain: Will the Toorak tram return to Domain Rd, and bypass the new interchange (just like the train bypasses South Yarra) or will it remain on Toorak Rd permanently, thus using the interchange?

Peter, from the plans I saw this morning, the Toorak tram will return to Domain Road and thus miss the Domain Interchange, which I don't think is a good idea. I'd like to see the tram remain on Toorak Road West to ensure integration with the other St Kilda Road services.

The proposed new tram route changes are also highlighted in this report Peter mentions above. A very interesting outlook. Let's hope this is part of the overall new Melbourne Tram Plan that will see other wider network improvements/changes/re-routing/extensions etc....
